Our bodies require cholesterol in order to produce healthy cells. Not all cholesterol is bad. However, there are dangers associated with high cholesterol. Some of the risks associated with unhealthy cholesterol levels are heart disease, diabetes, and fatty blood cells that can clog the arteries to your heart. Over time, the deposits can build up and make it difficult for blood to properly flow in and out of the heart. In the US, heart disease is the leading cause of death.

According to an eight-week study, seaweed may help to reduce blood cholesterol levels. The study was conducted on rats who were first fed a high-fat diet to boost their cholesterol levels. Next, a small portion of the rats were given a small supplementation of freeze-dried seaweed that contributed to about 10% of their overall diet. By the end of the study, the rats who were given seaweed had on average 40% lower cholesterol levels than the rats not given seaweed.

Another risk factor for heart disease stems from blood clots. Seaweed contains a complex carbohydrate known as fucan, which can help prevent blood clots. Another animal study discovered that tucans who extracted and ate seaweed were able to reduce the number of blood clots by as much as an anti-clotting drug for humans. There still needs to be larger-scale studies done with humans to prove more of these analyses.

Though the information we have from animals is profound enough to get us going on the right track. Seaweed is growing in popularity as a food, ingredient and supplement alike. With its many benefits it will be your best bet as the new staple in your diet.
